Historic Oconee County was founded in 1875. Oconee County offers residents a contemporary lifestyle in the tranquility of a rural setting. Watkinsville, the county seat, has a flourishing shopping and dining district with a decidedly local flavor while larger chain stores and restaurants can be found on the outer areas of town and throughout the county. Residents of Oconee County also have the benefit of a multitude of cultural and leisure options. There's a thriving arts community that includes pottery, painting and sculpting, and every year the Oconee Cultural Arts Foundation holds the national juried art show 'Southworks.'
Little league games and recreational activities are just a short drive away from Vintage Farms at the Oconee Community Complex, Veteran's Park. Additionally, Oconee County features an abundance of nature trails and other parks like Heritage Park and Herman C. Michael Park for outdoor lovers and sports enthusiasts.
The school system in Oconee County is one of Georgia's finest. Sixty eight percent of classroom teachers have a master's degree or better, and the scores of state and national tests regularly surpass Georgia's median, including an average SAT score of 1077.
